Sustainable Practices at London Block Management

A Commitment to Environmental Responsibility

At London Block Management, sustainability isn't just a goal; it's a fundamental part of our identity and how we operate as a business, and it sets us apart from other block management companies. We have developed a robust sustainability policy for our company and clients, which stakeholders regularly review to hold us accountable for our targets and ensure progress is being made.

We're dedicated to minimising our environmental footprint and promoting responsible practices across all aspects of our work, both in the office and on-site. We integrate sustainable practices into our operations without compromising the efficiency of our property maintenance services.

Here's how we're making a difference:

Office Sustainability

We have made some changes in the head office to ensure we run sustainably, with easy switches that make a difference.

  • All lighting has been switched to energy-efficient LED bulbs, reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions. This initiative saves energy and lowers our utility bills, allowing us to allocate resources towards further sustainability efforts.

  • We have embraced paperless processes, digitised documents and minimised printing to reduce paper waste. By leveraging digital tools and technologies, we've streamlined workflows and increased efficiency while reducing our reliance on paper.

  • Wherever possible, we prioritise FSC-certified paper to support responsible forestry practices. This ensures that our paper products come from sustainably managed forests, helping to preserve natural habitats and biodiversity.

Recycling

We have implemented comprehensive recycling programs for all materials, including paper, plastics, and electronics. Through these programs, we can divert waste from landfills by recycling valuable resources.

  • All incoming documents are digitised and shredded to reduce the proliferation of paper copies within and outside the office. The shredded paper is stored separately before being collected by a dedicated paper recycling system.

  • We enlist the help of specialist electronics refurbishing and recycling companies to dispose of defunct IT equipment.

  • We donate our old phone handsets to a charity that refurbishes and distributes them to those in need. This promotes digital inclusion for communities that may not have had access previously.

  • Office furniture that we no longer need is donated to local BID (Business Improvement District) Schemes to support the development of other local firms and charities.

Gardening

On-site Initiatives

  • We install and maintain solar panels and electric vehicle charging points to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. These initiatives reduce our carbon footprint and create a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.

  • LED bulbs, low-power lighting, and movement sensors are installed to reduce electricity consumption in blocks.

  • We have implemented rainwater harvesting systems to conserve water for gardening and, in some cases, cisterns. By capturing rainwater, we can reduce our dependence on local water supplies.

  • We promote gardening committees within our blocks, and our dedicated block managers work with residents, RMC, and RTM companies to introduce green initiatives. These include 'no-mow May', landscaping in wider verges, and introducing wildflower meadows in larger green spaces. Where regular gardeners are in place, we have also introduced compost heaps.

  • Where there is space, we have planted fruit trees, vegetable patches and herb gardens for the benefit of residents, which are maintained using only organic pesticides. These efforts not only beautify our surroundings but also create habitats for native wildlife and promote ecological balance.

Community Engagement

  • We make an effort to actively engage with the community through charity initiatives and partnerships to promote sustainability awareness and education. By collaborating with local organisations and stakeholders, we can amplify our impact and inspire positive change on a broader scale.

  • We aim to foster a sense of community within the residential blocks we manage, encouraging participation in sustainability efforts and events. Through community-led initiatives and activities, we empower residents to take ownership of their environment and work together towards common goals.

  • We work alongside residents to get involved in maintaining and cleaning the riverbanks of the waterfront properties we manage.

  • We are engaged with local wildlife trusts to monitor and enhance the local natural habitat surrounding our managed blocks.

Future Plans:

  • We work closely with freeholders, RMC and RTM companies and leaseholders to continuously explore new opportunities and technologies to enhance sustainability efforts further and reduce environmental impact. Whether investing in renewable energy solutions or adopting innovative waste management practices, we're committed to staying at the forefront of sustainability innovation.

  • Collaborating with developers allows us to drive positive change and promote sustainable development practices. By sharing best practices and lessons learned, we can leverage collective expertise and resources to address complex environmental challenges and create lasting solutions.

At LBM, we're committed to leading by example and having a positive impact on the environment. Through our sustainable practices and ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility, we're working towards a greener, more sustainable future for all.
